p1ay.cn is aspiring to become the stureplan.se of China. p1ay.cn is a nightclub community that tries to grab the market of young and wealthy youths in China.
In this interview What’s Next is talking to Alexander N. Bellas and Yu Wang, two out of the three founders of p1ay.cn. All got to know each other in Sweden, but now run their business from Beijing.

p1ay.cn is developed in ruby on rails, and as a second business the founders bought the blog and “community” chinaonrails.com. The goal is to make chinaonrails.com a fully-fledged rails consultancy firm with chinese programmers. Today 200 programmers are on their list.

Some highlights from the interview:

  • Companies in Sweden have been very successful in creating night life communities. Outside Sweden the phenomenon have for long been quite unknown.
  • A reason nightlife communities have not yet appeared in China, is that all business modells known in America are copied. However, good ideas from Sweden, such as nightlife communities, are not well known, and have therefore not (yet) been copied.
  • p1ay.cn are projecting millions of users after one year.
  • Chinese surfers often judge a website by looking at the brands that advertise. A well established brand helps the look of the site
  • Chinese communities often have very basic functions, and are not very feature rich.

This is the second podcast in What’s next’s series on internet in China.
